Overview of IBM Information Server Enterprise Search

This topic introduces Information Server Enterprise Search and the tasks that you can perform.

General information

Business analysts and data scientists search for information across the enterprise to gain insight and understanding of that information, supporting business needs. With the most up-to-date results, they are able to answer the following questions:

What is the meaning of the data?
What are the requirements for its handling or usage?
Who is its owner?
What other systems or users are accessing or using the data?

When you search for assets, not only keywords that you type in the search field determine what is returned in the search results. Other factors influence it as well, like the rating, comments, modification date, or quality score for some asset types.

Viewing the relationships between assets in the graph gives you a clear picture of how data is connected. You can further explore these relationships in the graph by expanding nodes. And if you feel you need more details about an asset, you can always open it in the application of origin and further discover valuable information.

You can also review a data quality score information for assets that can be classified and identified, which gives you even more confidence in your data.

Tasks that you can perform in the application

With Enterprise Search, you can perform these tasks:
  • Search for assets in the enterprise.
  • Explore relationships between assets in the relationship graph.
  • Add comments and ratings to assets.
  • Open the details page of an asset in the application of origin.

Assets in Enterprise Search

The assets that you can find in Enterprise Search are synchronized automatically from InfoSphere® Information Governance Catalog and producers.

Producers are applications that collect relevant data on systems like Db2®, Hive, Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), Oracle, or Teradata. These applications monitor activity on the systems and generate information that helps improve the quality of search results. You can find the producers in the IS_suite/DatabaseSupport/GraphProducers directory of the IBM® InfoSphere Information Server installation media, where IS_suite is the directory where you extracted the media. Before you can use them, you must configure them. For configuration details, see the technote IBM InfoSphere Information Server 11.7 Kafka producers.

Important: In the following cases, data is not synchronized automatically:
  • When you upgraded from earlier version and already have data.
  • When you import assets of type ETL.
You must synchronize such data manually. For details, see Synchronizing assets manually.

For the list of supported asset types that you can search in enterprise, and for restrictions related to supported relationships which are displayed in the graph, see the Assets in IBM Information Governance Catalog New topic in Information Governance Catalog New documentation.
